Meet Nikki

“Serendipity. Look for something, find something else, and realize that what you’ve found is more suited to your needs than what you thought you were looking for.”
– Lawrence Block

Serendipity. Story of my life.

I went off to college in search of a career. Instead, I found a Marine. A 6′ 4″ Marine Corps Officer, to be precise. With a zest for life. A love for God and his country. And a career that automatically relocates every three years. So, I did what anyone in my position would have done. I fed him. Won his heart over with s’mores cookies and tiramisu. And then I married him. And the Corps.

Pumpkin Cheesecake BarsI never sought out the military lifestyle, but it turned out to be the adventure of a lifetime. And it played a huge role in shaping me into the woman I am today.

I owe a lot to the Marine Corps. Like the chance to explore a new career at every duty station. Life-long friends. I even owe a little bit of credit for the creation of this blog to the Corps. She gave me a great excuse to make copious amounts of baked goods whenever I felt like it. Marines make great taste-testers. Probably because anything tastes better than an M.R.E. Anything.

Countless moves, multiple separations, one deployment, and one sweet, bubbly toddler later, we said “so long” to the Marine Corps and moved our family to The Big Apple. The hubs landed a job in financial consulting with a multinational financial services firm (he’s pretty amazing, isn’t he?) I traded in my “Marine Wife” title for that of “Stay-at-Home-Wife-and-Mom.” It’s not always a glamorous job. But I couldn’t be happier.

These days, you can find me in Del Ray, a charming little suburb of bustling Washington, D.C. Chasing after our toddler and cleaning up Cheerios. Or rocking a top knot and yoga pants in the preschool drop-off line. Or around town at any given playground or splash pad. Or in my kitchen. But probably in my kitchen. Okay, probably in my kitchen, being assisted by my tiny sous chefs. Baking is a passion. I love making things. Good things. Delicious things. I love making messes. Being creative. Making mistakes. Making other people happy. And who doesn’t smile at the sight of a cupcake?

Carrot cakes with cream cheese frostingMy culinary adventures don’t always turn out as planned. Sometimes a four-layer chocolate cake turns into heart-shaped cake balls. I don’t follow recipes well. I improvise. I substitute (even when I probably shouldn’t). I feed my husband cookies with funny names. I’ve been known to sneak veggies into muffins. And cookies. Because that’s what moms do. It’s an adventure. I love it. And now I’m sharing it with you. Delight in the unexpected with me.

Hi Nikki, This is Dan, from your old county crew back in Ohio. I found you on Tylers FB page and then this page too. Isn’t the internet a great resource? Anyway just saw you on here and wanted to say hello. I’m glad to see you happy and doing so well. You guys look wonderful together! I take it you are not in law? Not important ,just curious. Things haven’t changed much at the county. I started playing with a band I like so things are good in my personal life. If you get a min drop a line and say hello. Dan
